The unique culinary tradition of dim sum began thousands of years ago. Those who travelled along the ancient Silk Road through China would often need a place to rest before continuing on their journey, and in response, many teahouses opened. With tea’s digestion aid, teahouse owners began offering bite-sized snacks, and thus yum cha was born.

Meet Gillian Chung, a proud Chinese-American from Los Angeles. She is fluent in Cantonese and has a lineage originating from Taishan, Guangdong, China, and Hong Kong. She cherishes her connection to the language as a vital link to her ancestry.
